THE BEST BOOKSTORES ARE HAUNTED.

My name is Hecate Grimm, and I own a bookshop. It’s pretty average as far as bookstores go. Nothing special to see here, or at least that’s what my regulars believe. They also think I’m a ventriloquist, special effects guru, and dedicated actress.
Clearly, when it was raining brains, the vast majority went out with umbrellas. I’ve told them, time and time again, that I’m a witch, and this is a haunted bookstore, which is why it’s called The Haunt.
But no, it’s much easier to believe I wasted time learning to throw my voice and hanging invisible wires all over the place. After all, you’re modern people. How could anything supernatural be going on right under your noses?
Maiden, Mother, and Crone—the stupidity of it makes me sick. I guess you can come in if you must. Look around and actually buy something since you’ve had the audacity to interrupt my book. Just don’t wear out your welcome or waste my time with your idiotic questions. I have fictional characters to get back to, and they’re all more interesting than you.

Hecate Grimm runs a bookstore called The Haunt—a fitting name, given that the shop is literally haunted. But despite her best efforts to tell people she’s a witch and her shop is crawling with supernatural energy, her customers chalk it all up to special effects and clever tricks. Hecate is frustrated, and rightfully so. Between dodging stupid questions from patrons and dealing with her own magical responsibilities, she’d much rather be curled up with a good book.

As strange happenings escalate, the gap between the magical and the mundane gets even weirder, and Hecate’s patience is pushed to its limits. The story strikes a fine balance between comedic exasperation and mystery, with plenty of witty banter.

The Voice That Hooks You In

McQuiston’s biggest strength lies in the voice of her protagonist, Hecate. From the first page, her biting sarcasm and deadpan humor jump off the page. She’s snarky, sharp, and unapologetically over it, which makes her a refreshing narrator. There’s something utterly relatable about a character who just wants to enjoy her quiet life with a good book but is constantly interrupted by chaos.

Hecate’s running commentary on the stupidity of others is hilarious and drives much of the book’s humor. You can feel her eye rolls through the pages, and her frustration with her clueless customers gives the story a fun, edgy tone that keeps you hooked.

    What I Liked

What stood out the most in The Haunt was the main character’s snarky personality. Hecate’s sarcastic, witty voice pulls you in, making you laugh even during some of the book’s more serious moments. I loved how she constantly breaks the fourth wall with her remarks and isn’t afraid to call out the absurdity of her situation. The humorous tone blends well with the paranormal elements, creating a story that’s both spooky and hilarious. It reminded me of books like Good Omens or Practical Magic—light, fun, and magical without taking itself too seriously.

    What I Didn’t Like

While Hecate’s voice kept me engaged, I found myself a bit lost when it came to the actual magic system. The book doesn’t fully explain how magic works in this world, leaving me with more questions than answers. For instance, there’s a part of the plot that involves Hecate making a significant choice about living with people she doesn’t like—potentially for eternity. This felt a bit underdeveloped; I didn’t quite understand the motivation behind it. A deeper explanation of the magical rules and stakes would have helped ground the story and clarify some confusing moments.

    Final Thoughts

If you’re a fan of snarky, quirky protagonists and enjoy a good laugh with your paranormal reads, The Haunt will be right up your alley. SamiJo McQuiston has crafted a fun, supernatural romp filled with ghostly hijinks and a witch who’s both magical and magnificently grumpy. While the plot could have benefited from a bit more clarity around the magic and its consequences, the sharp writing and Hecate’s delightful sarcasm make this book a thoroughly enjoyable read.

    Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.5/5)

If you’re in the mood for a lighthearted, witty paranormal story with a side of sharp-tongued humor, be sure to check out The Haunt!

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A witch who sort of owns a haunted bookstore (The bookstore may very well own her) gets a book in trade. It looks like it has a blood stain. Then some vampires come looking for the book, and there’s a Goth circus.

The author tries too hard to make her protagonist quirky, and she comes out seeming more a caricature than a character.

The Haunt is a book about Hecate, who is a woman who owns a bookshop. I love this character as I have always wanted to own a bookshop but have never had the capital or start up to own one. Maybe one day in the future😉I also loved the drawings in the book they add to the story, and it is hilarious to see the main character in her shop especially liked the one with the kind of talking skeleton heads and she had a rolling her eyes at that. That made me laugh out loud.
Hecate’s bookshop is unique in the sense that she has former owners/ancestors who hang around the shop and talk to her as most people only see the skeleton heads with her mouth open, but Hecate actually hears the voices and talks to them. I like how she is a witch, and she is right society these days is different for you can hide in plain sight as she says. The haunt has been around since 281 BCE, which is a hugely long time for a bookshop. She takes two random books from one of her customers, which turns out to be something odd. Also, like Edgar, he reminds me of a character in a very specific book, but I love since he is in charge of her lair. Massimo and Hecate also have an interesting relationship, and I cannot wait to see where that heads too, especially with the ending in this first book!
The writing is very engaging for the readers and the story is hugely entertaining. She wrote very interesting characters as well and they all kind of really fit and you kind of relate to all of them. They author does an excellent job with this book, and I would love to read the next part of the book series and find out what happens!

This story had a great concept. A haunted bookstore passed on from generations through apprentices was fun to read. The added talking heads, ghosts, and Edgar, the alive house, were great for this time of year. I did not like the language and thought it could have been surmised, without using the actual word. However, the goth circus and vampires added to the drama. Also, a camper being attacked by monsters reminded me of Scooby Doo! I am giving this book a 3/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.

This is the perfect read for spooky season! It was darkly whimsical and funny. I wish The Haunt was a real place, talking skulls included! It’s been some time since I’ve read such an entertaining paranormal book. I look forward to the author’s future works.

This book reminds me of older fantasy shows like Charmed and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A monster circus, intrigue, vampires and more!!! 5/5 would recommend! The only thing I wanted more of was world building. But as this is what looks like the first book in a series I have high hopes for the author to develope the world the more the story progresses. Worth a read!
